Sustainable Agriculture, Livelihood and Food Security

Print

Unnayan Onneshan’s view on sustainable agriculture, livelihood and household is reflected through its various programmes on sustainable agriculture, livelihood and food security. The objective of the programme is to identify various inconsistencies within the governance and institutions in the rural economy. The programme would aim to explore the impacts of various inconsistencies on the overall rural and agricultural sector.

Bangladesh is facing a crisis in agriculture which threatens the livelihoods of a struggling rural population. The natural environment, although it is diminished as a result of land degradation and prone in areas to natural disaster, is still generally favourable for crop production. As such, the country continues to be characterized by a large agrarian base, with more than three quarters of the population living in rural areas and roughly 80 per cent of this population living directly off the land or from agriculture related activities. Increased productivity in the agricultural sector is not possible without ensuring farmers’ access to the agricultural inputs and in order to ensure access of farmers to the inputs, access to loan and credit is required. Small farmers in Bangladesh, as in most LDCs, are struggling to compete in today’s liberalized and globalised market place. There are a number of obstacles that hinder the farmers from getting the right from their output. This programme of the organization aims to review the literature of agriculture, livelihood and food security related issues, identify the loopholes prevailing in the sectors and analyze the applicability of the prevailing information to the Bangladesh context.
