The interest rate of the loan paid by farmers are quite high and so in the process of repaying the loan, farmers lose their output and sometimes even have to sell their small holdings and

become landless. Therefore, intervention is needed from the state as well as from the private sector. But proper implementation of the adopted policies needs to be seriously monitored. It is necessary for the state and different organizations to carry on with their initiatives for increasing farmers’ access to institutional credit. …..( more )

This research report is conducted to analyze the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats in agricultural extension services in Bangladesh. The study would help to understand the current level of extension services and the shortcomings of agricultural extension services from the point of view of producers as well as from that group working on behalf of the producers. It would also facilitate to assess what farmers and other relevant actors deserve from the agricultural service departments.….. (more)

The agricultural sector contributes 22 percent of GDP and employs 48 percent of our labour force. Without access to the agricultural inputs, farmers cannot increase productivity of the sector. The import and distribution of inputs should be carried out to guarantee access to farmers. The liberalization and privatization measures should be managed so as not to victimize the poor and marginalized farmers. It therefore follows that the policies prescribed by the IFIs should be cautiously dealt with. …. ( more)

The study aims to suggest ways for future land planning formulation with regards to environmental degradation and climate change. Some policy options are prepared to reform land administration and tenure reform. The paper aims to provide a picture of corruption prevailing in land administration. Like many other LDCs, farmers in Bangladesh are struggling to compete in the today’s liberalized and globalized markets. Farmers in Bangladesh, like many other LDCs are not getting enough support as the farmers of developed countries are getting. The global trade rules of today are against the interest of the small farmers. Due to decreasing support on one hand and increasing competition with the foreign market on the other, the small farmers are constantly facing challenges. ………. ( more)

Campaign (Sep 27th - Oct 6th 2009)

  • JSAPMDD Campaign during UNFCCC climate change talks

  • 50% of the World’s carbon emissions is due to Developed Countries. These result in drastic weather changes causing floods, cyclones and drought. And the brunt of these calamities are mostly suffered by the LDCs. Recently the UNFCCC climate change talks was held in Bankok (September 27th- October 6th).  The remedies that were put foreword by UNFCCC like off-setting nuclear power, carbon capture and storage and tree plantations, to name a few, did not appease the LDCs. To voice their discontent and put forward their demands Jubilee South-Asia/Pacific Movement on Debt and Debt Development (JSAPMDD) organized a campaign during the UNFCCC climate change talks. Mehruna Islam Chowdhury and Tahera Akter, Researchers of Unnayan Onneshan, attended the movement. Also, during the UNFCCC Climate Change Talks Tahera Akter from Unnayan Onneshan took part in a meeting organized by Asian Resource Foundation (ARF) on ‘Interfaith Consultation on Climate Change.’(1-2 October, 2009, Bangkok). She then presented her Research Paper on “Climate Change and Flow of Environmental Displacement in Bangladesh.”   …… (more)
